The little boy keeps calling to him as he rides away. When I was little I thought its because Shane didnt want him to look up to an outlaw. But I watched it recently and thought maybe he was dead from the gunshot .

I think you had the right idea when you were a little boy. I don't think it was that deep. I think Shane (Alan Ladd) fell in love with the mother and he didn't want to break up the household. The little boy Joey (Brandon de Wilde) admired Shane more than he did his own dad. "Shane, come back Shane...Shane"

The movie premiered several weeks before it's release (quite common back then), and the original ending was Shane getting killed in the end and saying, "I wish I could see another sunrise." The critics panned the ending. So the studio executives reshot the end with Shane riding in the saddle off into the sunset. BTW, Alan Ladd was off in Spain shooting a movie, so the studio used a body double to film the final sequence. Every once in a blue moon, Turner Classic Movies will show the original (should I say premier) ending. Just to show you how old I am, when RCA came out with the "picture disc" they released "Shane" with an "extras" sequence at the end of the picture disc, which included the "Shane Premier" ending. Have a good one.
