They are similar, but have different musical histories. I've always seen emo as "kids who would have been goth if they had been born a few years earlier"
Goths have better clothes, but emo's have shinier hair (although less creativity with their hair...always the same style).

Umm, Musically speaking, Emo is short for Emotional. IE: Music that has the intent of illiciting an emotional response is called EMO.
Goth is just the dark dreary stuff that focuses on Vampires. hehe
Personally, I hold little faith in the current generation's ability to catagorize anything properly because 95% of them will tell you that 70's Funk is "Disco" and that Techno is Punk. (If that is, they even know what Techno is. Which many of them don't.)
In short. they're pretty well idiots.

ok there is like a big *** differnt's ok so never ever confuse them again. emo's cut them selfs cause they hate them selfs they dress wired and wear tight jeans, converce, and have jet black hair and long sometimes, goth or laid back people they like to be left alone in the dark. they wear nothing but black and paint themselfs with black most of them just cause ur goth dont mean u worship the devil u can be relagiours, im a rocker but still i hate emo's cause they dont like them selfs

Goths think their tight and think they'll get attention by dressing all scary. But they look like F-ing morons and I want to beat the living crap out of them. Cause they ain't tight.
Emos are gay ***** that like to cut themselves, and they are always depressed for no reason. The name says it all EMOTIONAL. By the way their music sucks because they sound like they're always whining like little bitches in their music.

Goth- When a person wears all black and usually boots, long black jackets, black nail polish.
Emo- Multi- colored hair, tight pants, flat shoes, and such..
