If you're going by the IP address of the mail server that accepted the target's e-mail (be it sent via webmail or SMTP) then, unless the target is using a service offered by an ISP geographically local to them, there's a likelihood that the IP you're querying could be anywhere in the world.

What you need to do is find the address of the machine they're sending the e-mail from. You can do this by establishing an IM with them and typing 'netstat -an' at a console. (The second column displays the remote IP address and port - separated by a colon.)

Depending on the IM used (and the ports it, itself, uses to communicate with), you'll be able to hunt down their perceived IP.

I say perceived because they could always be running through a proxy. If that were the case you'd be informed of the proxy address. (And this, too, could be anywhere in the world.) The likelihood of this, though, is slim.

You could also always try a little social engineering and ask them (nicely) to type 'ipconfig /all > dump' into a console and attach the 'dump' file to an e-mail. Make up an excuse, like you're having technical problems and need their help.

Incidentally, ISPs' IP addresses are usually always dynamically assigned these days, and there's a decent chance that when their modem (if it's cable/DSL) or computer (if it's dialup) is turned off that a different IP address will be assigned to them at the next opportunity.

Not exactly.

It depends on the email service provider, and the location of their servers.

Just because the company is located in Montreal, doesn't mean their email server is located there. It could actually be in China.

That may be a little overexaggerated, but you get the idea.

Check out the following website: http://www.dnsstuff.com/

It will probably get you the information, you are looking for.

That's quite intelligent...yes, if you recieved an e-mail from a TRUE Montreal resident, the IP addresses would be similar (like an area code)...I'm not from there though, but good luck!

but what if the guy is using a proxy server based in montreal to send you the mails ?? or maybe he's using an anonymiser service to hide his own IP, then what ??

don't bother yourself with such trivial details, if the guy has a past record of telling lies, then go with you'r gut feeling and believe that he's in toronto, and be in peace. else learn to trust others and again be in peace.

The finder might be 95% certain, but it may also be 100% wrong! There is no certain way to check on the sender's location, especially if she/he does not want to be found.

most of them sucks they may be able to give your country correctly but not location,If your ISP is country wide ISP, if it is a local ISP then you may get your IP location correctly
