From Heathrow you can take the District Line into the city, but you'll probably have a student representative at the airport...I would check with the school. You can use the oyster card on the tube, as well as busses.

I wouldn't worry too much, just take a deep breath and get ready for a great experience.

You can catch the underground (tube train) from Heathrow into the city.
You use you're oyster card, when you go into the tube station, to go down to the trains. (ask a member of staff, or watch other people do it) There are these small gates, with a yellow circle on them, you touch the card on the circle, and the gate opens.
When you get on a bus, the yellow circle is next to the bus driver. Touch it with the card, if the little light on the machine goes green, you can sit down.
You can put money on this card, or buy the tickets, which are also put on this card, at the stations, from the ticket booths, or ticket machines.
And just relax. I'm from Africa (we have no tube trains) and I think London underground and public transport is very easy to use.

using the underground is very easy you have absolutely nothing to worry about. the easiest and cheapest transportation from heathrow is using the underground, the Piccadilly line (blue line) is the one that stops there it costs 4 pounds to get to zone 1 (heathrow is in zone 6).
