Why do so many people seem to be more able to form an emotional connection to strangers in cyberspace than to real people they meet or work with etc. Why are we more willing to open ourselves up online?

Of course all your points about anonymous are true, but doesn't it seem sometimes like we care more about the feelings and opinions of cyber people than our actual friends? A girl I work with got a teddy bear in the mail because her chat buddy thought she was feeling down--but nobody in the office bought her a bear. Strange, huh?

because through cyberspace a person could feel that since they are talking to strangers the fear of having secrets be known by those people close to you is very remote...and through this openess to one another, friendship is developed and further emotional connection happened...

Because they tend not to judge us the way the people we know in real life do. They tend to take everything we say at face value, even if we are lying through our teeth. And, you can tell a stranger things you can't tell your own preacher, lol. So long as we don't forget that those people are strangers and not meant for physical contact, we are fine. It's when we forget that we often end up in trouble.
I tend to think the most important reason we can tell them anything is because they know only what we tell them and can't use the information against us the way people we actually know can and do.

Because body language can be a very powerful way of indicating what someone thinks, negative body language combined with negative verbal language causes people to be less expressive with their feelings due to the overwhelming disapproval. However, because you can't see someone's eyes or hear their tone of voice, typed words have less impact than the same spoken words and people are therefore willing to share their deeper feelings. We are also able to use it to our own advantage when communicating online, as evidenced by the popularity of things like internet porn where you don't have to go through the potential embarassment of buying it from a person.

In the "real" world, there is a sickening array of agendas and hidden motives.
Here our agenda is given: to learn and share. (Of course, choose your chatrooms carefully.)
Because we have fewer distractions here on the static screen in our quiet homes, boring jobs, or lonely coffeehouse we can pursue one train of thought almost indefinitely and quickly make intentions known by virtue of what we have said about life.
Those who maintain a skeptical mind (i.e. thoroughly inquiring, not lazy or cynical), can succeed in uncovering another's true nature, if that is the intention.
Do you really care about your audience, or are you just trying to fulfill a fantasy? That IS dangerous.
Try to establish agendas in "real" life. You will quickly see a very different world, and you will see some real emotions as well. You might even find true love.

a gr8 Q really !! & so true...
its sure a feeling that one can always walk off with less hurt if put down...cause we dont really gonna see each other for real...& could always build up another identity when caught erring....
in real life if caught with mistake the fear of being pointed at..& being identified by one & all ,with no hideout...
fantasies work online much better...cause all u share online is thoughts & feelings....without looking into someones eyes...
its like watching a movie..when we watch it we r in it...once done we switch it off..though the good movies linger for ever in our minds...& sure if given an oppurtunity would go back to seeing it again...same feeling online...we get back with the ones who touch our souls...with never having to fear wat the world around gonna think...

I think its because you don't have to talk to them face to face, so we feel more comfortable. It is weird how we can care more about someone we've never met face to face than a friend in the real world. I know I get that way sometimes.

because we don't worry about being judged, if we say something offensive or the wrong way even if not meaning too we tend not to over worry about the results
