I practice, but i still have trouble during tests.

Aside from memorization, there is a trick to factoring. I call it the 5, 2, 3, 7 trick. An easier way to remember this is five, even, odd, seven, or the acrynom FEOS (or uglies in Spanish). Basically the trick is to figure out whether your number is divisible by 5, then by 2, then by 3, then by 7. This works well for small numbers until to 4 digits or so. It can work for larger numbers, but there are larger prime numbers which can trip you up.

On with the trick.

Start by looking at the last digit. Does it end in 0 or 5 ? If yes, then your number if divisible by 5. Now divide by 5 and what do you get? The "result" is technically called a quotient, but I like to call it "result." If the last digit of the result is divisble by 5, then divide by 5 again until you can't repeat anymore.

Next look at the last digit and determine whether it's even or odd. If it's even, then divide it by 2, and repeat the process until the last digit is odd.

When the last digit is odd, add the sum of the digits together and see if it's a familar multiples of 3 such as 6, 9, 12,15,18,21,24, 27, etc. If it's is, then your number is divisble by 3. Repeat until you can't divide by 3 anymore.

At this point your "result" should be a number where the last digit is an odd number, and cannot be divided by 3 anymore. Now try to divide it by 7. If it's still not divisible, then you have likely completed your factoring work. Collect all the numbers you have used in the division, including the last "resulting" number, and you have your factors.

Example1:

125 (last digit is 5, divide by 5)
125 div 5 == 25 (last digit is 5, divide by 5)
25 div 5 == 5 (this is the final result, you need this one as well)

So the factoring 125 results in 5*5*5 (last 5 is the final result)

Example 2:

244 (last digit is even, divide by 2)
244 div 2 == 122
122 div 2 == 61
last digit is odd, so try adding the digits 6+1==7 which is not a multiple of 3. And 61 does not divide into 7 evenly, so you stop.
So the factoring of 244 results in
244 = 2 * 2 * 61

Example 3:
340 (last digit is zero, so divide by 5)
340 div 5 == 68 (last digit is even, divide by 2)
68 div 2 == 34 (last digit is even, divide by 2)
34 div 2 == 17 (last digit is odd, and not a multiple of 3 or 7, so stop)
Factoring 340 becomes:
340 == 5 * 2 * 2 * 17

For larger numbers, you want to continue to try higher prime numbers such as 11, 13, 17, 23, 29, 31, as your divisor (in other words, divide your result by these numbers in addition to FEOS).
