I'm not sure, but you probably aren't using the right type of ethernet cable. You need a crossover cable because otherwise the two computers send on the same wire and listen on the same wire, so no data is sent during 2 computer communication.

If you feel like converting your cable to crossover, you can Macgyver it by cutting the wires and splicing them together and then taping them. I did it at the beach when there were no crossovers to be found. You just need to compare the colors to the guide at and make sure the wires connect correctly at the other end. Just make sure you don't have a short ...

Or, get another ethernet cable and use a hub or switch.

You either has to wire the Ethernet properly or use wireless USB but since you said you can share I am inclined to believe you've gotten the wiring right, but somehow you don't know exactly how software portion is done.

Go to Start -> Run, type cmd, then type ipconfig
C:\Documents and Settings\user>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter 區域連線:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Something like that should show, take note IP Address. Put that into the multiplaying machine field (usually "Host to connect to" in whatever game that is) some game took a server-join approach some took peer-peer setup approach.

XP is modern Windows, an IP is likely to be there, and most games that is being played today runs TCP/IP as its network protocol; if it does not and opt to use either NetBIOS or IPX set those up in Control Panel -> Network.

first of all you should check the cable and then read the documantation of the game either that is able to run on TCP/IP based network as NFS2 runs with Null modem cable and IPX network only
how ever if you are connecting 2 computers back to back with out using switch u must use Crossover cable
