Why has the border been unchecked for so many years allowing drugs to be brought into the U.S? Now all of a sudden we want to build fences to stop illegals.......mmm?

Well, let's see. The Trillion Dollars that we spend on this ridiculous war in Iraq didn't seem to make us any safer from terrorism, so let's spend another Trillion dollars (that we don't have) to build a wall.

Bottom line is that it's too long and difficult of a border to protect 100%.

Let's start with the second part...after 9/11, the southern border was looked at as a possible place for terrorists to get thru, not just Mexicans. With the help of the Minute Men and lots of public outcry, the government has finally said they'd do something. (They haven't funded it yet I don't think). The Mexicans are mad because we want the border closed. They say we are being racist because they no longer will get to sneak in here. Most of the illegals are alright folks, but we have been hearing about quite a few bad apples lately. The only thing I have against illegals is my tax dollars go to pay for their medical bills and stuff and I can't afford health insurance (because it's so high in part to them). It is stupid to sue the US because there are no water fountains in the desert for illegals to get water or they may die trying to get here. (This has been tried). Closing the border is not racist, just certain people want it to appear that way for political reasons. Now to the first part--ever since we bought the land from Mexico to make our southwest bigger, the Mexicans have been coming over. It was their land, they were used to it. The government just turned a blind eye, having more 'important' things to do. Then to get Latino votes from the legal folks, the parties in power just kept on letting them cross over. I guess they thought the immigrants would get legal eventually. So now, government doesn't care about the crossings. 9/11 hits and now they realize all these Mexicans have gotten over here...the bad guys can to.

The border hasn't been more secure because officials didn't want to take the time to enforce the law and do the PAPERWORK. It's easier to just watch people walk by. We have sanctuary cities too you know so that illegals can get to those cities, and be noticed, but not deported. The reason we are making a fuss about it now is because we are tired of paying for illegals. It is costing us money for their welfare, and their healthcare. We educate their kids for free, and if they do work, it's not taxed. You can't just come here and expect to be respected by our Constitution if you entered illegally. The drugs, my friend were not let in. They were smuggled.

Not "all of a sudden"... every decade since the 60s people have been trying to get politicians to close the border.

But they refuse, Dem and Rep alike. Why? Because they are spineless political sell-outs who take bribes and think that if they appeal to the criminals, they will vote for them.

Blame both parties.

I think it's been increased since 9/11 because there have been accusations that some illegals are terrorists.

I think it all goes back to 911 and the continuing threat of terrorism on American soil. It wasn't a problem until it became a problem!
