The Supernaturalist’ is set in a near-future city owned by a large corporation. A low-orbit satellite (50 miles high) controls traffic, communication and sanitation, and hence the city is named Satellite City. Cosmo Hill is an orphan, and lives at the Clarissa Frayne Institute for Parentally Challenged Children, a Dickensian environment in which the orphans are used for product testing. Cosmo escapes, and in doing so is severely injured. He observes, for the first time, a cryptozoid species which appears to suck his life-force.

He is rescued by a group of street children who can see and battle these organisms (called Parasites), and upon joining them has to deal with many twists and confusions.

As in ‘Artemis Fowl’, there is heavy emphasis on humor, tough-guy posturing and technology. One of the main characters of The Supernaturalist is named Stefan Bashkir, used by Fowl as an alias in Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident. Also, the corporation that owns the city, Myishi (presumably linked to the scientist of the same name who sold his soul to the devil in the Wish List), mentions beating Phonetix, a company that was also mentioned in Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code. The dystopian near future is in many ways similar to Blade Runner and to a lesser extent Neuromancer, but Colfer's influences are older; rooted in Raymond Chandler and other hard-boiled writers.

The surprising ending leaves enough room for a sequel, as there seem to be even more supernatural creatures around

I read it a while ago, so forgive me for being wrong somewhere...
Yeah well, the setting is somewhere in the future in a large city. The main character starts out in an orphanage, which is pretty bad, and then lives with a couple of other kids in an abandoned warehouse somewhere in the bad part of the city.
Stefan dies in the end. (At least, that's what I think his name was.) They fight back against the corrupted police system or something, I'm not sure.
Basically, the kids are the good guys, the cops are the bad guys.
I'm sorry that I can't help you out more, but I read a lot and I read it about two years ago.
I recommend that you read it though. It is really a good book and is quite funny, like all Eoin Colfer's books.

oooh i read this book
it begins with the introduction of Sattelite City, then Cosmo Hill. the setting sets up the reader for what Cosmo might be going through. His life as an orphan is apparently not good, nor is anyone's in the city. Lving in a city where people have had heartbreaking lives, the reader will be prepared to see that Cosmo will have to go through much before the plot of the story reaches its climax. In additon, it also informs the reader of the possible state of the future Earth, as a warning about pollution and environmental damage. i could tell u the whole story if u want
