Effaced just means that your cervix is thinning. At the time of birth, you will be dilated 10cm & 100% effaced. Since you are just 50% effaced & not dilated, you have some time to go. 50% effaced is not an indication that you would have a difficult labor or easy labor or even if you will deliver vaginally. I'm not a mother, just a nurse & I've never had any children of my own, but I've seen quite a few deliveries. "Pursed-lip breathing" is a breathing exercise that may help with labor pain. You should be able to find some info online about this breathing technique. Hope this is helpful & Congratulations!

Effaced is how thinned out your cervix is. So your cervix is 50% thinned out. It doesn't mean your about to give birth, but you could be. Everyone is different. Your cervix is still closed, but it can open at any time, over any time period. Every labor can be difficult, its all about your ablity to remain calm and control your breathing to control the rushes (labor cramps) I hate the word pain because it shouldn't even be procieved as pain. Its not painful, enless you make it that way. When I was in labor I walked around alot, that helped. I also took a hot bath, that really helped. I got on all fours and made a kitty back stretch, I hope you understand what I'm talking about when I say that because I don't know anyother way to explain it. The kitty stretch is something you should be doing now to get your baby into the proper birthing position and to relieve the pressure on your back (I had back labor in the beginning). You might want to pick up a book on the bradley method of pain management in childbirth, that is if you have time. My favorite book that really helped me with my all natural birth is called "Spiritual Midwifery" Its about these xian hippies back in the 60's on a caravan cross country home (van) birthing there kids and the tecniques they used. Really amusing good reading. If you know how to meditate I would suggest that as well during labor. Mainly, just keep happy and compy and have someone there who loves you and will do everything you want them to. Good Luck!!!!!

It means your cervix is thinning but you have not started to dilate yet. It is hard to say when you will have the baby. Some women go from being thick and no dilation to 5cm in a matter of a few days, some can take weeks. Try walking if you are eager to have the baby. Also you always hear old wives tales about having sex, watching scary movies and eating spicy food. They are all supposed to help you go into labor.

it means that your cervix is thinning in preparation of opening
dilation starts after the cervix is completely effaced. The cervix is long and thick, it sort of squished down, that's what effaced is. Then it can start to dilate for the baby to pass through.

It means that your doctor needs money.
And is trying to "convince" you that you will need an operation.
Try to get a second opinion.
