John Lennon became famous by being in a spectacular rock band and refused to do all the typical RockStar things.
He became famous because he was outspoken and daring and few people understood him at first. This made him the subject of controversy, and controversy usually leads to fame.
The beatles became popular because they had fresh, optimistic ideas about music.
John Lennon wanted to leave a legacy of rethinking perceived realities. He wanted us to really look at what our beliefs were and challenge them to see if they were valid on a personal level.
The Beatles influenced people through their music (and that influence is still happening today).

John Lennon was an icon of that era. There was war and darkness and the world needed a vessel of hope and a way to channel the spectrum of emotions. Plus, he was the central figure; one of 4 very handsome, energetic, humorous young men that wanted and succeeded in contributing to the the world in a dark time via music and entertainment.

He/they provided hope and a distraction for a generation that desperately needed it. He was the voice for that generation, in that time.
John Lennon had a unique, spirited, unbridled energy that couldn't and wouldn't be confined to a box.

He represented himself and was intent on opening the minds of the generation/era that was passing.

He and the other 3 Beatles possessed violet-indigo energy in contrast to the common rays of energy at the time. They opened the minds and heart of people by their words of love and made a welcome mat for the first wave/generation of Indigo children (born in the 60's).

the beatles had a totally new look and that influenced fashion for many years, john became famous partly because of his truly great song writing, and partly because he went out of the way to seek peace and spiritual growth through their trips to the east and later after the break up of the beatles with his song Imagine and his life with yoko. john truly was seeking peace and inner growth. their songs went from silly to very deep and insightful and we grew with them.
