In the credits on Gilmore Girls Edward Herrmann is the last credit at the end of the opening song. He is credited as such 'with special appearance by Edward Hermann' (don't quote me, but it's something like that) He is in almost every episode. Why is he a "guest"?

My husband thinks it's because it's written into his contract. He has done a lot of movies and sometimes gets offered bigger roles, so it's probably to allow for him to take time off away from the show whenever something comes up (and he has been away from the show a few times).

Ah, one of the age-old Gilmore questions. Here's just a few that I know of:
1. Where is Lane's dad?
2. Wasn't kirk inroduced in his first episode as "mik"?
3. How was Rory old enough to drive on her own in one episode, and then celebrated her 16th birthday a few episodes later? Also they introduced her as 16 before her 16th birthday?

Yes that is interesting, he should be a regular actor and not a guest. Since he play's Rory's GrandFather. Maybe you answered your own question since he is not in every episode maybe that is why he is a guest, that is the only logical explanation I can think of.

probably because the writers needed him for only a few episodes, but as the story progressed they realized that having him around would help the story, but they still have him as a guess because you don't get to see him as much as the other cast on the show.

Probably his acting status - like Heather Locklear on Melrose Place.

Probably because he is a self-important pompous idiot who thinks he's too good to be listed with the remainder of the cast.
