Take it to a local autozone or auto store. If you can access an autozone, they can read engine trouble codes for free.

LOL, a blown head gasket?? seriously? you'd defiantly get a lot more than a check engine light there, also your rpm's would be going crazy. Dodge Man is completely right. My car was doing the same thing, but I hollowed out the catalytic converter which made it do that because of the 02 sensor (as he stated).

i own a repair shop,,and it has a sensor going bad on it,,usually the o-2 sensor will set the light off on the free way, because it operates on temperature readings, and they may be higher on your car than they should be, id take it to an auto zone store and have it scanned for trouble code,,since the light came on,,there will be one in the computers memory and they can tell you exactly whats causing it to come on,,its not a serious thing,,or it would stay on all the time,,its just an intermittent fault in it,and it will show up ,when they scan it good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

My wife's lumina used to do that. It's probably an oxygen sensor or a polution control sensor.
Have it checked out. MOST triggers for the "check engine" light are very benign - but sometimes they are VERY important alerts that mean your engine needs immediate attention to avoid severely expensive repairs.
It shouldn't cost much to have diagnosed (my mechanic did it for us free - because we're regular customers). If the car is under warranty, have the dealer do it.

hello and good question,
I for one would get the Engine Codes read 1st. By doing that you will be able to somewhat determine the area of the problem IF they are related to your check engine light.
Once you have that information a process of elimination can fix the problem BUT it can be difficult and might need to get it fixed at a repair facility.
Best advise i can give you is this. Take the car to the Dealership - have them run a diagnostic check they will tell you what you need to fix - get that info and take it to your mechanic tell him to fix what the Dealer said. Walla !
Good Luck

Maybe it only comes on at certain speeds.
The engine light is general and could mean several different things. Refer to your car manual.
