My first lesson was great. I told the guy I didn`t know crap about playing but when he was done with me that day I understood more about it and it`s alot like playing piano. He gave me some exercises to do and the next time I went in he gave me some basic chords to play and practice by the 3rd visit he was teaching me to play a song. Keep an open mind and pratice alot. I didn`t like playing some stuff shown to me but later on it came in handy when I played out in the clubs. I use to play alot of Randy Rhoads stuff because he took classical licks and turned then in to Heavy Metal. Still one of the best guitarist that ever lived but his life was cut short from a plane crash. Listen to Diary Of a Madman album of Ozzy Osbourne`s. Listen to the title cut Diary Of a Madman and see if you can pick out what acoustic guitar is cat gut and which one is steel string guitar. And his solo`s are all done in 4 to 5 parts but fused together to sound like one take. Over the Moutain on the same album is that way!! Just play as much as you can. Sitting around doing nothing or watching tv play. Go to the park or somewhere you have peace and quiet and play. Pissed off pick it up and play. Feeling down and sad pickit up and play!! Stay with this it does pay off!! Been playing for over 20 years!!!

I enjoyed my first guitar lesson because my teacher wasn't
expecting miracles from me and he didn't get any either.
But I do remember getting my first song that I played off the
Internet and I bought a thin, medium and thick plec/pick and my
guitar was strung with new strings so I was prepared straight up
and there was no time wasted as lessons can be exe.
The worst thing that happened to me was I couldn't get
my guitar case open because the zip got stuck on the bag
and I had great trouble manoeuvring my guitar through a
crowded shopping centre and nearly speared someone
with the arm of the guitar but they survived and so did I.

Have fun

Since you already take piano, you should have a pretty good headstart, at least as far as reading music goes. Plus, you've hopefully developed the discipline. But don't just play what's in your lesson book. Your teacher might even write out notation for a song you like, which a lot of instructors do. It helps to give students some idea of the things they like to play.

But otherwise just keep playing around and experimenting with different notes. Take what you learn in your lesson and expand on it. Listen out for anything that sounds good to you. It might also be a good idea to buy sheet music for stuff you like.

relax first thing make sure your guitar teacher is on the same level as you.. depending on the type of music you want to play in a
band, then that teacher should be familiar with that type of music.

Just take it one step at a time. And don't get frustrated when you make a mistake. The only way you are going to get better at it is to practice.
