there is usually
1. VGA-what most monitors use about an inch wide and 1/4 inch tall
2. dvi and dual link dvi- looks kind of like a beefed up version of vga, has a "plus" looking thing to the side of the pins, be careful not to get dvi and dual link dvi mixed up when buying a new monitor/grapgics card
3. svideo-round, kind of looks like a ps/2 mouse port mainly used for connection to tvs
4. HDMI-very new HD video standard is available on only about 4 laptops at the moment used for connecting to HD-TVs looks kind of flat and long
5. composite-the red yellow white connectors you see on most tvs/vcrs/dvd only available on a few select laptops or with an expansion card

you can also get a usb-vga adapter for cheap, but it is VERY slow, and is only used for convenience sake

PCI Express, AGP, and PCI. PCI Express is the newest and best, AGP is getting outdated, all computers have PCI but it is not fast for graphics cards so you wanna use one of the others if you can.
