You can rent an aerator from a hardware store....it's like a handle with a thing that turns and pulls out plugs of soil....leaves them all over the yard....looks like lots of dog crap all over.

You can also just walk around in some cleats....although that won't aerate it as far down as the machine thing.....

there was a thing on TV a while back about walking around a lawn in golf shoes to aerate it.

I don't know if by manually you literally mean by your hands (and not your feet)...

Wear a pair of golf shoes with spikes or a pair of baseball shoes with spikes. Then walk your lawn in a pattern. There are also manual garden tools made for this, too.

Many. if not all reputable Garden shops sell a device that looks like a "rolling pin" with long spikes all around it. This device is on the end of a long handle.
Simply roll the "rolling pin" to poke holes in your yard, commonly in rows. - Performing this by itself does enhance your own exercise - especially when you areate a large lawn!
My yard is 3 acres.

I have a little boy next door who finds it fun to poke my lawn with an old broom stick handle! I first discovered the holes then wondered what was causing it, it was little Mikey from next door! Maybe you could just borrow my little next door neighbor! Or find a little kid who likes to play in the dirt!

Every time you mow your lawn, leave the grass cuttings on top: this will do the job in good time.
Or: give your lawn a topping of sand.

You can buy spiked pads that strap to you shoes like sandals to manually aerate.
Check your local Garden Center
