Think of a math operation: What do you do to the first number to get the 2nd number?
2 +/-/x// 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,... = 4
There are several possibilities -
2 +2 = 4, 2 x2 =4

Usually, functions provide more than 1 example, such as:
2 =4
6 =12
10 = 20
If this were the case, the function is x2.

Are you in california? I swear the ****** math books they use here confuse people more than teach them. We had that stupid function machine when I was in high school. I understand math well, I got an A in calculus, but I still don't understand the function machine. I know how to graph a function, but the stupid machine analogy just sucks.

uh, what exactly are you asking?

The only ways that 2 could come out as a 4 is if it's multiplied by 2 (itself) or if 2 is added to it.
