They say in the movie that it is based on true events. Which is kind of true. The movie is VERY LOOSELY based on a man named Ed Gein. He supposedly killed numerous women and made a body suit out of their skin, however it was only proven that he killed 2 women. All of the chainsaw stuff was just to make a movie. (a really good movie!) There are other movies loosely based on Ed Gein as well... like Psycho and Silence of the Lamb.

Ed Gein loosely inspired "Psycho", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Silence of the Lambs". He was a real sweetheart. When he was arrested, a woman was found hanging by her ankles in his home gutted and decapitated. There were parts of many women there as well. he made masks of tanned skin of faces and a vest of their skin. He robbed graves and shot women too. He was morbidly attached to his sadistic mother.
