Is "heroine" pronounced as "heroin" like the drug, or does the first part sound more like the male version of the word, "hero" with "in" at the end?

Both the drug and the female protagonist have the same pronounciation. They are pronounced as "hay-rOin" with the first part spoken as things that you make while the sun shines and the second part rhyming with Groin!

The "O" in both of them is stressed and spoken for a longer time than other parts of the word.
