I saw this guy "playing" it on TV and it was so cool. He just waved his hands around it and it made music.

Theromin, the first all electronic musical instrument.

It was invented by Leon Theremin, a Russian immigrant who had spent some time in a KGB detention camp over some spying allegations. The device generates an electromagnetic field which is distorted by the presence of the hand. It's a strange instrument that everyone has heard in movie soundtracks and such, but it's very rarely seen or explained. I had the chance to try it out once and it is very difficult to control the pitch because the slightest movement of the hand or fingers changes it. Such a beautiful and eerie sound though when played by somebody who actually knows what they're doing.

It's called a Theremin. The pitch of the note is determined by how near or far your hand is away from it.
