Yes they can but its much harder to do it in awd vs. a rwd car. For instance, Subaru's WRX STI will out accelerate almost any normal car on the road but that's it's strong point, traction. But there are acceptions, with its adjustable diff. you can transfer torque from the front to the back, which if you planned on drifting you would want a 10(front)/90(rear) so that you can over power the fronts grip with the rear. There are many other drifting techniques that would allow you to get one of these beasts sideways but with the awd it would be much harder to maintain all wheels spinning to prevent traction unless you had massive amounts of power.

drift as in japanese drifting? like in tokyo drift? then NO

AWD has drive train to all 4 tires. with AWD, when u step on the paddle, power is transferred from the engine to all 4 wheels... thus u cant control the power to the rear tires - whereby n need them to actually spins out of control to make the booty of your car drift - in a controlled manner.

drifters usually pick rear wheel drive cars. they r more fun :)

AWD cars r designed for stability. its suppose to reduce drift !

in rally, u c the rally cars drift. the drivers actually pushes their car to the limit at corners. at corners, without slowing down, the drivers let their cars drift. with their AWD system, they actually let their AWD grip the track n steer their car back on track. this way, they buy time.

If by truly drift you mean to complete a controlled slide, then yes.

If by truly drift you mean competitively, then no. (IE Formula D)

Of course WRC cars are rarely heading straight, but that comes with the territory, dirt roads and knobby tires. WRC is about speed, where as the drifting I'm referring to is about show.

The dynamics of AWD do not prevent the car from drifting, but they do not allow the large angles and "show" aspect of professional/competitive drifting. (IE high steering angles, full-lock corrections, and tons of smoke.)

Of course they can drift, look at all of the rally races. Just make sure if the car is equiped with a traction controll system that it is turned off.

Yes, especially on glare ice or packed snow that has refrozen overnight.

AWD cars can also spin out and roll over. Four wheel drive is not a guarantee of traction!

yes and better than 2wd cars. Look at all the rally cars they are mostly awd, if not all of them.

no because as soon as your wheels start spinning your front axle will take over and stop your tires from spinning so you can't be as stupid with the car as you want to be.
