My sisters name is Legna. It's Angel spelled backwards. Angel is our Fathers name. A few years later I was born and he added an "A" to the end of his name and called me Angela. Thank goodness his creative juices ran out by the time I was born.

Living in Hong Kong, it is the Eastern practice of having an English name. Bless them, back in the 80's and 90's when they were still perfecting the art, many strange and curious names became well known in the expat community. We weren't laughing at them, just laughing.
The trouble came when they would use words phonetically similar to their own Cantonese names or meaning, or just use words that took their fancy.
Rambo Chan, Elvis Wong, Precious Shum ... you get the general idea.

But the all time classic, that worked as great advertising amongst us, was when we all went to a specific bank branch, to meet the young pretty female teller by the name of......
Fanny Pong.

I have a cousin named JOKER. This is how he got this name...his father was notorious for gambling in his local village. Gambling is illegal and the local villagers and the police knew about his activities but never paid much attention to it. One night his wife gave birth to my cousin and his eldest son ran all the way to the father who was busy gambling in the woods with his friends. After getting the news his wife just gave birth to a baby boy he went to the police station to register the baby's birth. He wanted the name JOHAR to be inserted in the birth certificate but the policemen at the station wrote the JOKER to teach my uncle a lesson. My uncle only knew about the name change after a few days when he went to collect the birth certificate. By then it was too late to change it. Until today my cousin is still called JOKER!
