Because admitting that one of their candidates wasn't a paragon of morality could cost them a House seat -- and, in a year like this, quite possibly the House. It's the old "When you point at someone, the rest of your fingers are pointing back at you" thing. Only difference is, we don't usually find out who or what the fingers are pointing back at until after an election.
Foley is blaming alcohol because he wants the possibility of salvaging his political career in the future. If he can publicly get sober and ask forgiveness for all the bad things he did under the influence, he might have a shot. It's worked for plenty of politicians in the past.

Who held on to Foley's Instant messages for 3 years and strategically released them to ABC just before the election ? You really think a Republican knew in advance and did that ?
And speaking of Clinton-that so & so pardoned Congressman Mel Reynolds from IL . , convicted on 12 counts of sexual assault , and solicitation of child ponography . Maybe Clinton ought to explain why he set such a miserable example for the whole country . And just maybe the drive-by media will tell us who it was that released the 3 year old I'M's of Foley's - right on the heels of an election-instead getting him away from other potential victims .

Just like the Valerie Plame mess the repugnantcans will find way to schmooze this over. There were people who should have done something but they were worried about losing a repug seat from Florida where the last election was won.
If he had been a Dumbocrat they would have pounced on him like tigers.
Both parties pull crap, lie to us to cover it up because they know they can get away with it.
They think we are so stupid that we will just continue to allow this to happen.
It's time for a third party to sit in the senate and the white house.

The dummycrats are pulling all the stops to create a smoke screen just before the election. Instead of having good things to say about the candidates they are putting up they are finding excuses not to vote republicans. It is like the guy with lousy washing machines that says the competition has defective washers. Instead of having known dummycrats like Woodward publish negative ideas in his book just before the election they should push their plans for the future. OH i forgot they have no plans for the future because of the leaderships lack of backbone to make decisions.

I do not believe that anyone knew of Tom Foleys actions. An no one is to blame for what this sick man did, not the Republicans, not the Democrats, not the boy... no one but Tom himself. If it was known what he was doing I am quite sure any decent human being would have stopped him... and if not - well, humanity is losing its way.

No political party likes acknoledging the embarrassing (and illegal) conduct of one of it's own. Look how the Dems defended Clinton for his lewd, improper. and illegal (sexual harrassment laws) behavior with Monica.
In this case, I think the Repubs were too concerned with their party image to do the right thing, which irritates me since I am a republican! I think Foley should be severely punished AS WELL AS those that knew and did nothing! (accomplices after the fact?)

Foley is getting away with it, the "justice dept." said that there is a high standard for child exploitation, and Foley's emails didn't reach that level. Foley's gonna apologize, blame the alcohol made him do it, and then get a cushy private sector job. Bottom line is Foley was one of their "good o' boys" and they don't sell each other out.

It is not just Republicans. It is the government. They never like to own up tp their mistakes.
Remember they got their jobs because they are perfect, blameless, never did a thing wrong in their lives.

Well, sir, considering you're a ranting, raving insaniac, I really can't imagine anyone giving a rat's @$$ whether you like them or not! (I just made up the word "insaniac"--do you like it?) By the way, you just asked six questions there. Are you interviewing the voices in your head?

Well when it was not plain on what was going on how do you handle something? Some say this person knew and this person says that they didn't. Who to believe? The one who say that this person knew when there is no proof or the one who says that they didn't know and there is no proof?
