ancient egyptian signifigance..the jackal was the god of embalming and lived in the necropolis (cemetery) the gods name was anubis and he prepared ppl for the afterlife and guided them to whatever you believe comes after death. maybe the signifigance is that she is guiding people to death because people close to her die because her son kills them...

I think the film makes it clear that Damian (the anti-christ) was literally born from a Jackal (his mother) impregnated by the Devil, in an evil twist on Christ's virgin birth from Mary who was good, and pure.
