Because this is America I don't see that ever happening. The places you are allowed to smoke are being more and more limited everyday though. It would just be nice if everyone that does smoke would see the benefits of themselves quitting. I am a former smoker and I just decided that I wasn't going to let that little white stick have power over me and be stronger than me. I will admit that it is hard to quit but I feel so much better since I have stopped and really enjoy things like climbing a flight of stairs without being out of breath. And not stinking like an ashtray all of the time.

I am on the fence on this question. I personally do not smoke, and hate smoking. I am allergic, my daughter is also and my father died of liver cancer.

However,,,where do we draw the line? What I mean is, because I am overweight, does that mean a ban should be put on me going to McDonalds for some friends?

We can not have it just the way we want it. If we are free we should be free but not at the cost of others.

Some argue that public smoking is harmful to others healt, which maybe true. All places should have designated smoking areas, unless the owner doens not want any smokers. Public smoking strikes me as violation of human rights. I recenlty quit smoking and I can't stand to be around it, however if a person wants to smoke in an area where it is allowed they should be able to.

Hello,

I have a story to tell you. It's about a wonderful man. A loving and caring father and grandfather. He'd been smoking all of his life. He was a great person. A good person... A kind person, who unfortunately had a bad habit... smoking. By his mid-50's, he was slowly getting sick, and it progressed rapidly. He quite smoking in his early 60's. He was, from the age of 66, connected to an oxygen tank and his mobilty critically reduced. He was in and out of hospital during those years. He couldn't even go in the shower by himself. Here was this loving man who was becoming incapacitated. He rarely moved from his lounge chair in the dining room, as his stength wouldn't allow him to. In the early 2004 he was hospitalised, by mid-year he was in rehab, and on 27th September 2004 he passed away in front of his wife and his eldest daughter.

His daughter still mourns. She was always there, when she wasn't working she was by his side and with her mother. His grandson was with her almost everyday too, to comfort her as she was distressed and emotional.

I am the grandson. and to this very day I mourn a great man. He achieved so much in his life.

My Grandfather was aged just 69 when his life ended, leaving his loving wife, 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. His life was drastically cut short due to smoking and his lungs breaking down. His lungs were only working at 18%. 18% !

Smoking is one of the worlds leading causes for disease and loss of life... preventable loss of life. If there is any good that can come from smoking, that's learning from our mistakes and banning it completely.

This is just one story of thousands around the world. My heart is still broken... i didn't know my Pop before he was sick. I'm 19. And my strongest memory... an image I will never forget, is my Grandfather on Christmas Day 2003. He could barely move. It was a hot Australian day, and he was so sick. I would glady have taken my life to save his. I loved him so much... I still do.

I'm a former smoker and realize it is a dirty smelly habit. However, why ban something that has been legal for centuries? That is a typical Liberal response to any thing they don't like. "BAN IT"

Why not just ban everything that gives a person joy.

Heck, people die at theme parks. Should we ban them too. Why not ban cars, trucks and motorcycles. That would end drunk driving, speeding, highway deaths and our dependence on oil.

No, but if it happens, they better ban drinking too. Cigarettes kill over time. DRINKING can kill a family of 4 in UNDER 30 seconds.

Not to mention there are lots of other habit's that groups of people complain about. People just picked smoking because its the easiest thing right now. Next to people being over weight. That's all I hear about on the news channels now.

Why not complain about how our kids are killing each other OVER DRUGS? Maybe if we worry more about our kids and them doing drugs and killing each other than we did about smokers we wouldn't be holding as many funerals that deal with children like we do now.

My point is, if your going to complain about something, make it something worth complaing about. Not something stupid.

No. I have the right to smoke if I want to. Besides, if you ban smoking what are you going to tax?

As a non-smoker who lives with a smoker, I think it's an excellent idea. At least in all public places. Unfortunately, the tobacco industry represents a large part of our economy. So I doubt very much it will ever happen. That's too bad too. If you think about it, what other bad habits do humans have that can cause such wide-spread illness. Oh well, the world ends in 2012 anyways right?
