I did for my husband but it was a total bust. It was for 40 also. We had a new baby which added to the chaos, then, everyone but 1 couple cancelled at the last minute. I told him the shower was leaking into the dining room chandelier. He was so upset, came home, all worried and then had 2 people to greet him -- what a wreck! But we had a good time anyway!

My best friend tried to set one up for my 16th about 5 years ago. it was going well until one of the girls invited came and told me that she was not going to come to my suprise party (in those words). She felt agitated because her religion prevented her from celebrating birthdays so she took it out on me by telling me. To this day she believes she did the right thing, because she also believes other people should not celebrate birthdays. to me being 16 i felt so betrayed. I couldnt believe the only time someone made an effort for me to have a suprise birthday she ruined the whole thing. in the end it felt just like a normal get together and my best friend who tried to organise it felt so disapointed. :-(

I had one.. and it turned out great, but at first I was annoyed. We went to a friends house the night before my birthday. I was tired and wanted to get home... he kept stalling. Wanted to wait til midnight... at midnight...out came my friends with a cake, singing and then I got sapphire jewelry. Good ending ;)
