for a B: 80=(82+75+71+2x)/5
400=82+75+71+2x
2x=400-82-75-71=172
x=86

for an A:
90=(82+75+71+2x)/5
450=82+75+71+2x
2x=450-82-75-71=222
x=111
She can't get an A. 85.6% is her maximum possible score.

Her scores are 82.75,71 and these are all out of 100 points. I use 100 points since this is what the final exam is out of.

82+75+71 = 228 / 300.

Now, the final is worth 100 points, but it counts twice as much! We know it can't be more than 100, but to make the math easy, think of it as 200 points for now.

You've had three midterms and the total possible in the course is 300 points. (Rochelle just happened to score 228 total.) With a final exam, that will be 500 points (because we are counting the final twice.).

What is 90% of 500? It's 450 points. What is 80% of 500? It's 400 points.

So, to score an A she'll need another (450-228) or 222 points. But, since this exam counts twice, divide by two. 111 points. Sorry Rochelle, you can't score an A in this class. She would need 111/100 on the midterm. Remember, she had two C's on those midterms, so that's a lot to makeup.

To get a B, she needs only (400-228) or 172 points. Divide by two and you get 86.

So, she needs an 86/100 on her final to get a B in the class.

Double check this:

82+75+71+86 (and one more since we are counting twice as much on the final) + 86 = 400. 400/500 average = 80%.

Good luck!

Let x be her score on the final.

Then her final average is (82+75+71+2x)/5, with 2x because the final counts twice as much as a midterm, and dividing by 5 because there are basically 5 midterms overall.

To get (82+75+71+2x)/5 = (228+2x)/5 >= 90, must have

228+2x >= 450 => 2x=450-228=222 => x=111 => no chance of an A.

To get a B: must have (228+2x)/5 >= 80, or

228+2x >= 400 => 2x=400-228=172 => x=86

I am assuming that the final grade is twice as much as a midterm grade means that the final grade is doubled. So if she got a 50 on the final it would count as 100.

Let x be her grade on the final test.
Then 82+75+71+2x = 2x + 228

So the average for the four tests would be

(2x + 228)/4= (x +114)/2

To get a B (x+114)/2 = 80
x+114 = 160
x= 46

To get an A (x +114)/2 =90
x+114=180
x= 66
