I'm a 5 trying to get to 6. Yes. I make active effort to try and gain levels, though I don't do it by answering questions without thought, or not thoroughly. If someone asks a question, then I feel it is much more respectful to offer a thought out response than an idk, I don't know, or something simple like yes, or no.
I also don't think that higher levels answer any better than lower. It all comes down to who covers any question with an intelligent answer that meets the needs of the asker. The more effort put into a response, often including taking the time to look for links, etc....that will point a questioner in the right direction, are the ones that should receive 'best answer'.
Those I've seen given by level ones on their first day and level sevens on their second year. I'd rather have a level one answer of intelligent, considerate, and interested response, then I would a higher level of disinterest and rushed response.
Of course, ymmv. This is my opinion only, but thank you for asking a thoughtful question about this site.

I'm on level 2. I signed up on 9/11/06. I think the higher the level either means the person has a lot of time to spend on Yahoo! Answers or they have been a member for a long time.

6~ I used to try to get to higher levels, then once I got to level 6 I realized points mean nothing so I just started having fun and asking a bunch of questions. I do answer, but not to get to higher levels anymore. If I get to level 7 good, if not, oh well~!

i'm level 5. it's kinda hard not to advance to higher levels, but once a person hits 5 they can ask and answer all they want so i think that's everyones goal is to get here. as far as a better answerer, no, i don't think it makes anyone better. the only thing i think it does for them is they probably know more what people want and like to hear and which questions should be answered and which ones they don't want to answer.
