I recently found out that my soc. sec. # and the #'s of lots of other people had been left in an abandoned building in my town. The man who did our taxes passed away, and our numbers have been floating around for anyone to view. How can these numbers be used to find out personal info. on me, such as banking info, salary, or any other personal info?

A social security number by itself is pretty useless, as you need to know how to look up the information that is associated with it.

However, if I have your name and social security number, I can do a "credit pull" on you - that is, get a copy of your credit report.

This will give me account information for all your open accounts - who they are with, how much you owe or have in them, etc.

With a membership on "Ancestry.Com" I can then use your name to find your date of birth and if I have your taxe records, I've got enough to go on to assume your identity.

I can then take out loans, get official IDs made, even get a new social security card with enough patience.

So where is this trove of information?

If your name, birthdate, and social security are all available together, your identity can be stolen. You need to find out who was responsible for cleaning out his office and find out whether the forms were shredded or not.

If you can't do that, request your credit report. Do it every three months for the next two years. Contact all the major credit companies and let them know your identity has been stolen and they are to deny any new credit cards in your name.

often times your social security number is a automatic password to acess credit accounts. Usually with the last four digits of your social and your zip code, companies will tell you anything about someone. I know cuz I have handled a lot of financial stuff for a friend of mine. Usually they just ask you to give them your name...as if you couldn't make one up.

i'm not sure but i think they can use your soc. sec # to steal your identity making it possible to access your personal info. everyone in the us is assigned a personal soc soc # so it's like your human ID...
