hmmm...here are some guesses:

Western Worm Snake (Carphophis Vermis)
Ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus)
Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)

all are mainly dark colored with bright stripes down their bodies and can be found in Arkansas. Try this website:

There is what that is called a red belly black snake and then there is a rare snake that has only been found a few times in the world and has been in the south western part of the USA. It is completely black with a red stripe down it's back from head to tale. If this is the snake you found and it is still alive you might be a hero if you was to turn it in so it can be studied.

I live in NWA and have never seen one here. Really I don't want to walk out in my back yard and see one either. I would kill it and might end up in jail over it. lol

Approximately how long is the snake? And is there just 1 red stripe down the back or are there more?

Sounds like something that might have gotten loose-maybe a corn snake morph? I'd like to see a picture of that snake.
