Absolutely correct Rentahand.
Many answers here will be neither right nor wrong, but personal opinions.
Best is most relative to that, and in todays marketplace, prices are pretty similar.
My suggestion would be,,,involve HIM in the experience, allowing that he may have a preference, while still accepting that it may be a TOOL, but it's being given in love.
I personally use many brands, and have my own preferences, usually based on features, not strictly brand names or cost.
Certainly a cordless should offer a case, a battery and charger,,,as most do, and a decent warranty, as well as locations locally for service and repair of the tool.
I use mine on a professional level, so I expect them to perform well, and last at least as long as the "job" does. I also buy extra batteries and chargers so I don't have "down time" during a specific task.
I am a bit unsettled by "SETS" which offer either a flashlight or radio included. In my situations, I've never chosen to use the tool in the dark, nor can I usually hear a radio while doing a task with the cordless drill.
DeWalt
B&D
Ryobi
Craftsman
Makita
Porter
Michigan
Are all reasonably priced,,,even for a DIY, but you might consider that some of them are more adequate for professional use than others.
I also suggest NOT BUYING off brands, such as Chicago tools.
The 14 plus Volt cordless is fine. I use 12 and 18 in my tool needs, but don't get less than a 12. I can also suggest that many B&D cordless batteries are able to fit in a DeWalt charger for recharge, yet not the other way around??? What I like too, about Dewalt, is that a charger let's say that came with my 12 volt, will charge multiple voltage batteries.
Again,,, If I was in your place, I'd make it even more an experience, by sharing the choice with your Husband. I say that pretty much CUZ going to an HD for me, is like a Toys R Us store experience for a Kid,,,smiles.
Merry Christmas.

Alot depends on how much he will be using it. You get what you pay for, I would stay away from Blackand Decker, Ryobi, and Skil. Dewalt, Milwaukee, Hitachi, are all good buys, Hitachi 18V scored well as a light to medium duty drill in Consumer Reports and some other publications. Panasonic sells a nifty drill with a quick release chuck that you can switch to an impact as well. But if it was me, and you wanted to spend a little extra money I would go with the new lithium ion Makita line. My father has used his makita for 10+ years. On the cheaper end Craftsman 19.2 volt is a good pic. Hope this helps

How about a HD gift certificate and let him shop. Otherwise you can't go wrong with Craftsman, DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee.
As long as you can get parts, and repairs if needed. Craftsman is a real good value. Check on rebates. Makita has a lot of deals throughout the year. Watch out that you don't get something so heavy that it's hard to use, like an 18 volt. Holy cow.
Hey ebsharer - I gave you a thumbs up for CHRISTmas, not for the 18 volts. You must have better forearms than me.haha

Dewalt and Black & Deckers are same company. Dewalt is higher end professional power tools. Many contractors use them.
It's very good tool. 18 Volt Hammer drill will cost little less than $ 300.00. Positive are quick charge, powerful, and quality. Negative is price.
B & D is market as a home use for home owner. It's 14.4 volt drill will cost about $ 90.00 and it's what it is. Good for easy jobs around house.
Sears is not like they used to.

Well you can't go wrong with the big names like Dewalt, Makita, or Bosch. But from my experience with 4 previous cordless drills, you don't need to spend more than about 150$ to get a good one. You can't go wrong with Craftsman's, my previous 2 have been and no problems with either, and they always put them on sale before christmas.

Actually, Craftsman power tools are not guaranteed for life, only their hand tools are. Wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. BUT, I certainly would check out Craftsman tools, because they are a very good value for the money. No offense to anyone else, but Black and Decker or Skil tools are junk. Stick with the Porter-Cable, De Walt or Craftsman brands.

I have a Craftsman set that I bought years ago, which came with a drill, a circular saw, 2 batteries and charger, and a carrying case. They work great.
