I recently saw what looked like a large black panther in the woods near my home, but to my knowlege there should not be anything like that living in this area of the U.S. Any help would be appreciated.

It is possible. I have talked to people who swear they seen them in East TN. Black ones at that.( these guys are knowledgeable hunters who are not idiots) It could be an unknown population with melanistic characteristics or released pets. At the same time, there could be mountain lions , but no one wants to deal with the Endangered Species Act ,or no one has spend the time looking for them.

The cougar/puma/catamount/mountain lion, or "panther" as they call it in the south occasionally appears in a melanistic (black) phase. It isn't a different species, just an uncommon color form of the same species.
