I'm getting my friend to ship me some shoes not available in Canada, and I was wondering if he, who lives in the US, ships them to me in Canada, will I have to pay some sort of duty even if its considered a gift? May there be tax involved?

Wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this.

If its from a singular person and not a business, you shouldnt have to - as you did not purchase the item.

You're right, this isn't an "investing" question.

But your shipment depends on its value, and whether they are checked and inspected.

For example, some people try to get around the cigarette tax that way, but you can send one carton of Marlboro's by mail, duty free.

Just try it and see what happens. You won't go to jail for a pair of shoes.

It depends on Canadian Law but I do not believe there is any duty between the two countries any longer in regard to small items.

Depends on the value and origin of manufacture of shoes.... chances are good there will be duty and taxes levied.

If it is gift, I don't think so. Call Canadian customs and ask. I think it has to be under 50 dollars.
