Look up the top chart songs & records (& who recorded them) from the 40's. You can download some from Limewire and torrents. Some made their way onto older and more recent movie soundtracks.
Old record/CD shops are helpful tracking down those tough to find songs. EBay is an option. Yahoo Groups has some oldtime music (40's) groups - Join them for free & see what they have.

Just do a search on the internet using "1940s pop music" as a search term, and you'll a listing of websites where you can find what you're looking for.
