I did a lab today in biology where we looked at the cells scraped off the inside of our cheeks, known as Epithelial Cells. I do not understand a question from the lab...

How is the flatness of the cells related to their function?

PLEASE HELP!!!

She wants specifically for you to relate to the cell structure of the surface skin cells. You could tell her that the sloughing off of the skin is one reason why they are flat. Also, the normal flora plays another role in the structure. Also, consider the warm & moist environment. I love biology! Think about it, make it fun.

Epithelial cells on your cheeks are flat so that they can fit tightly together. This helps their function: to protect the inside of your mouth. It's the difference between buidling a wall with a bunch of blown up beach balls and with sandbags--the sandbags will do a much better job.
