On The Simpson's, why do all the characters have four fingers and not five fingers?

Most animated characters dating back to Mickey Mouse have four fingers on each hand. The reason is that it is easier to draw a hand with four fingers on it that with five. The show's writers have poked fun at this tradition on a number of occasions (for example, Jimbo the bully once referred to shoplifting as a "four-finger discount").
