I'm 29 years old, I seen rap music start as an alternative to disco back in 1979 with the Sugar Hill Gang, and Afrika Bambaata, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Melle Melle, to the 1980's Whodini, The Fat Boys, Beastie Boys, Dana Dane, Doug E.Fresh, Salt N Pepa, EazyE and NWA, BDP, Public Enemy, etc. 1990's Naughty by Nature, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Master P, Wu Tang Clan, Onyx, Tribe called Quest, Boot Camp Click, etc. 2000 50 cent, Eminem, Dem Franchise Boyz, and so many other groups. In the 80's it was who rhymed the best, 90's it was about real life topics and intelligence(conscious rap), 2000 it's right now all about what your doing to your car and what you have on your car and what the females are doing to you sexually. What's the next decade hold? Will it die and get played out or will hip hop artist find something else to rap about? Eventually they'll have to rap about something different! New decade of rap music.

So...you saw all this begin when you were what, TWO??? I'm sure it made a profound impression; you truly heard the mix talking to you. You must be a really heavy dude! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! One thing you probably missed, being so young; they left of the first letter when they named it Rap. It actually starts with a C.

I'm 25 and I used to listen to alot of rap many of the ones you mentioned such as Wu-Tang,Beastie Boys, Onyx,Cube, Dre,Snoop, Craig Mack and so on . But recently in the last while I have been turned off by the rutinely played out cliche of the popular hip hop scene which in turn, turned me quite cynical of the whole scene.
I think the genre is missing more of the intelligent insights of masters such as the RZA. Like you said(concious rap) one could only hope the new hip hop era will do a 180 (not 187) and bring some new respect for the many critics that has shyed away from this genre

I am 38. I have been here since hip hop started. Yes, I am so old I owe Jesus a dollar. and I haver seen all sides of the game. It all comes around full tilt. Just getting more stupid and ignorant every time. The Next phase of hip hop will be... rappers not only drinking Crunk out of Gas cans, but Rappers drinking it straight out of the pump. Furthermore, rappers will just flat out shoot you instead of beefing over stuff. It is the sign of the times. Wont rappers ever get some common sense and stop acting so damn ignorant? and pull up your damn pants that aint cool!

As controversial as he thinks he is...I think Kanye has tried to start to bring this self-awareness/conscious hip-hop back. With people getting bored of the "braggadocio" type lyrics.. Kanye, Common, Talib, Mos-Def and other quasi underground artist are getting some decent airplay. We can only hear so much about "ridding dirty" and "making it clap". But don't you worry once MTV and VH1 get done exploiting it......"mainstream" rap is a wrap. No pun intended.

you know what, i am only 18, and even i think hip hop is going down the gutter. they talk with out any morals, education or sense, but instead with ********* and arrogance. they think money is everything. but you know, you cant take it with you. and even though it sounds harsh, a lot of them are really asking for it- sleeping with countless women- you know, with the aids thing going around. theyll end up like my boy, easy e; leaving behind 7 kids with no father and no money because they spend it all on frivilous things such as hypnotic and diamonds. i mean no disrespect, i am a young black woman, but i dont think that stuff is cool, funny or smart. they always say they from the hood and they "representing", but you never see them go back to they hoods or try to build a community center in the "real" ghetto neighborhoods like where im from. they only talk about it. these rappers need a reality check.

Maybe they'll rap about being wrapped in bankruptcy court, as opposed to the criminal courts.

I think it will either get better and serious and meaningful or get worse and push the limits of stupidity with senseless rhymes of no importance.
