1/ all the other students will say magnets too ...
.. suprise the teacher,
2/ heat all the filings to K1000. the aluminium (Al) would melt leaving iron (Fe) filings as solid
3/ leave the filings in water, the iron would be the rusty bits
4/ throw the filings into liquid potassium. Aluminium is lighter than it so would float, while iron is heavier and would sink (this only works in theory. Potassium (K) is very volitile)
5/ Put the filings into sand. Silicon (Si) is between (Al) and (Fe) so shake the container. that would work too. Iron to the bottom, Alum stays on top (no joke this time)
6/ give the guy who mixed the two types of filings a detention and you won't have to worry about this again

Use a magnet. It will pick up the iron and leave the aluminum.
