I've always heard "a possum eating persimmons"...and I guess it makes their mouths get that way from the tartness or something.

My mom used to say it when I was a kid. I've always wondered what it meant, too. I guess, if you are a yellowjacket that can eat a possum, you'd have a reason to smile! I guess...😁
