Try googling New Madrid Fault, or New Madrid Earthquakes. There are very old, ancient plate boundaries underneath that part of the country, they slipped in 1815 (?) twice, producing the two biggest earthquakes in the country's history until Alaska's Good Friday quake of 1964. They say it could happen again. The history of the quakes is astonishing, they were so incredibly powerful.
