In Merry Old England, shaking the right hand would signify that you didn't have a weapon in your sword hand.
By the way, at that time left handed people were thought to be evil. They could shake with the right and stab with the left.

It had to do with showing that your right hand was free of any weapons; most people being right-handed.

Most people are right handed and when this social greeting came about men did this gesture to show they had no weapons,
therefore extending their shooting hand !

This is kind of gross :-) but I think I heard in the old days they wiped themselves with their left hand...seriously!!


Oh yeah, it was weapons, not sticky fingers :-) Hmmmm, where did I get that one from I wonder?!
