lets say it's a golden opportunity that you're right in front with him in your reaching distance

i honestly think that if there were no children i might just do that
but if there are children, chances are guns can accidently go off

Much depends on circumstances left unstated in the question.

If the gunman is determined to shoot the children, I have the obligation to disarm the gunman or die trying. Accidental discharge is not a consideration if he is going to shoot them anyway.

If the gunman is intent on escaping, I may be best served in letting him go.

If he is looking at me with his finger on the trigger, only the most desperate circumstance will make me attack him. Regardless of what they show on television, most people who are shot do not die immediately. If I am close enough, I may be able to rip the beating heart out of his chest before I collapse.

In a hostage situation, It may be better to let police negotiators handle their end. The gunman is unlikely to shoot hostages if he thinks he can get away. The police are not going to let him go, but can promise him better treatment if he does not shoot the hostages. Once he kills a hostage, all bets are off.

One can't really predict ones actions for there are all the unpredictable variables out of our control. Even in reaching distance the finger on the trigger would move faster than your leg in full kick and before your foot connects the bullet would hit you.In order for that to work he'd have to not have his attention on you. The tragedy is that when this type of insanity occurs no one among those being held thinks that this horriffic act will actually occur until it begins and then often already too late.

It does depend on the gunman and his state of mind, but I think if you're a man you're almost obligated to act. Especially if he is right in front of you. Chances are he'll be intimidated by another man and/or adult and will soon realize he needs to control you. It might be your only chance.

Lately these things always end up with someone getting killed, or why would he be in a room full of kids. Chances are he is there to shot a kid anyway, or maybe all of them until someone kills him. How many of these guys kill themselves or "let" the police kill them. It seems they want to die and just want someone to push the issue. You might as well do it before he has to kill someone to get his nerve up and make the police try to kill him.

Tough one. Tackle him? Always keep yourself between the gun and the kids..... Make sure that if that gun will go off, it will hit you and not one of the little ones. If you do catch a bullet, though, that leaves the kids completely vulnerable, which is bad. I think always try to disarm him because you don't know when things will turn scary and when you'll have another opportunity to do something.

Recall the Beslan school massacre in Russia. The first male that spoke up was grabbed by the muslim Jihadis and executed in front of the group of women and children. All others froze.

I hope I would have the courage to act.

I would like to think that I would try to bring down a man/woman trying to kill a child. But if I was in the situation... I don't know. In theory I would definitely attack that person and use their gun on them... and of course, empty the gun... I mean why waste a loaded gun?

I would! I think at that point the mom in me would take over and I would do what I could to save the children. I would hope someone else would also do that for my children!
