why is the african clawed frog illegal in california and ohio? are they dangerous?

If you want to talk about environmental impact of a foreign species of amphibian consider the cane toad in austrailia. As for the African Clawed frog and its environmental impact in California, there a few ponds in the San Francisco bay area as well as throughout California that have african clawed frogs. The frogs have apparently upset the balance of native amphibians. They will essentially eat just about anything you can think of, and with several species of endangered native Californian amphibians such as tiger salamander already in trouble by the depletion of habitat, the last thing we need is a frog that eats them as well as all other species of native wildlife. Perhaps in an aquarium they seem harmless, but then again so does a cane toad. Regarding the issue of people not understanding the species, the California Academy of Science has done extensive research into this area, and has concluded that this species is indeed dangerous to the environment, if you dont believe me read the article below or better yet just go to the lilly pond in Golden Gate park and notice that a majority of the frogs that used to be in that area including bullfrogs (another non native species) are mysteriously missing.

African clawed frogs are carnivorous which is why they are probably illegal in California ans Ohio i live in Illinois and have had one for four years now and he has ate other frogs i put in with him so its probably so they dint upset the balance of nature should someone get tired of the and let them go

No they are not dangerous. Some states do not allow any reptiles at all because they do not understand them. African clawed frogs are pretty much just lay around in the tank and not do much.

I live in Ohio,and as far as I know,they aren't illegal,as they are in every pet store.My veterinarian has them in her waiting room.In California they are illegal because it's warm enough for them to reproduce,and they displace(or eat) the native frogs and other animals small enough for them to eat,and they WILL eat anything.But they're not poisonous to mammals and they don't bite,so they aren't dangerous,except to the environment.People who release non-native species into the wild don't realize the negative impact they cause.

they don't want the frogs getting loose, because they can be disturb the enivronment

No, they're harmless...it's probably an exotic pet trade law.
