What do you think, are there any other fish that they won't kill if they're in the same tank?

And do they need a filter in the tank?

Actually, these fish like to live by themselves. They're very solitaire fish and very territorial. Yes you can put them in a tank with other fish but you have to watch out for those little fin nippers! But back to the main subject, no they don't need don't need an air filter. Just make sure your tank has a cover on it because they will jump out!

Keeping Siamese Fighting Fish

In their natural environment these fish live in the shallow waters in rice paddys. They are at home in a bowl and do not require a filter if you change the water about once per week. They can live in a larger tank with some types of fish, but aggressive fish like oscars will fight them and other fish with long fins like goldfish or angel fish will agitate them. These type of fish are best off in a bowl as long as you remember to keep the water reasonably clean for them. They do breathe air by going to the surface so the shallow water is good for that too.

I'm not a fan of fish in bowls. You'd be better off buying one of those 5 gallon set ups. Don't have to have a filter, but you won't have to do as frequent water changes with one. Actually, for the prices I've seen for the 5 gallons, you could buy a 10 gal set up for a few bucks more. You can add other community/tropical fish with them, just stay away from male guppies (with the fantails), goldfish, barbs (fin nippers), other bettas male/female, gouramis (I've heard it both ways on these) really anything labeled fancy.

It is cruel to make them live in a small bowl. You can buy 1 or 2 gallon tanks at wal-mart pretty cheep. If you do want to put them into a tank with other fish you'll have to be careful, since bettas are slow moving fish the others may nip it's fins and end up killing it. You can always try a tropical tank with fish that are peacful and don't nip fins.

My bettas live in large aquariums and they aren't in the habit of swimming around much, they just kinda stay in the same general area (makes it possible to keep more then one in a large tank).
A betta on it's own doesn't require a filter, but if you are going to mix him with other fish, it would probably be a god idea (but not an under gravel filter, they don't do much). Look through pet stores for kits that are at least five gallons.

give a betta at least a gallon so they have room to move. i find that mine prefer a 2.5 gallon tank if living alone. i also have 4 females living together in a 10g and 3 males in a divided 10g.

bettas get along quite peacefully with shorter finned tetras, danios, and minnows. all of my aquarium-living bettas live with tetras (and chinese algae eaters, which i personally have never encountered problems with).

bettas do not need a filter if you keep the water clean with regular water changes, but if you get other fish to start an aquarium you'll have an increasing need for one (because of increased waste production and because those other fish need the surface of teh water to move for more aeration).

One will do just fine under any conditions, bowl, aquarium or decorative glass, etc., but you can only have 1 per container. They will fight until the finish if they are paired. They can survive with other small fish, but an Oscar will make it a tasty snack! Also, some bigger goldfish will snip at their tail.

My Siamese live in a large vase that holds about 2 litres of H2O, he seems happy, whatever that is to a fish.

They are very territorial, they should be isolated but they can be with other fish, but not their own kind unless they are mating . But a little bowl won't harm them. most fish store keep them in a little cup.
