Depends on the day - hard question

For an American novel, I would say The Great Gatsby or Lolita
For a spy novel - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
For an anti-war novel - Catch-22, Slaughterhouse-Five, All Quiet on the Western Front
For sci fantasy - Dune
Romantic Comedy - Pride and Prejudice
Romance - Far from the Madding Crowd
Funny - Money or Confederacy of Dunces

I don't know if this helps....

The best novel I've ever read that is a really hard question especially with the amount of books I have read. I think I would have to say....The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Aeul(sp? and i dont know if thats the right last name) or Blessed Child by Ted Dekker, but there are a lot more that are really good.

Jeez that one is hard. As a rule I only read Anne Rice and Stephen King ( I sometimes veir, but rarely). Of King Deffinetly IT or Desperation (not a big fan of it's sister The Regulators though). As for Rice, I absolutely LOVED the entire Vampire Chronicles series. But I know people who couldn't get into them. I think it depends on what you are into. I'm a bit goth, so there ya go. *shrug*

No way I can call one piece of fiction the best. I'll throw a dart at my top 20 list and say Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. That was a fun one and I really love his writing and wordplay.
