It's very, very sad, but I believe that sometimes it's the kindest thing to do, if an animal is suffering terribly and nothing else can be done. However, I am a strong proponent of doing everything possible for an animal before it comes to making that decision. Truly, it should be a very last resort, IMO.

I hate the fact that so many animals are put to sleep due to people & their carelessness of fixing their pets. I worked at an animal shelter & it was terrible to see animals having to be put to sleep because people didnt want them. The manager tried to keep them as long as she could but durring mating season there were just too many of them & some had been there months; some really sweet animals are put to sleep & I hate it. Fact is ; there arent enough animal lovers & homes for them all & if people would take the time & money & responsibility we wouldnt have such a problem. However, sometimes the animal needs to be put to sleep. If it's really sick or old ... that was the worst part for me. I had to comfort the animal while they put it to sleep & I tried my best to make sure it's last few moments were good - I cried everytime but in some cases it really was for the best.

If an animal is in pain and there is little to no hope of it getting better, it should be euthanized. I have had many pets that have been members of the family -- cats, dogs, and ferrets. I make sure they get the best medical treatment possible. But there comes a point where it the animal is in pain and the quality of life deteriorates to a point where you need to let go for the pet's sake. It's not an easy decision, but your pet will usually let you know when it is time. Although I miss them, I know it is the right thing to do.
On the other hand, I oppose euthanizing an animal (pet) for the convenience of the owner. There are a lot of no-kill shelters and agencies that will take in animals and find them homes.

animals are not "put to sleep" they are given injections that end their life.. they are not mearly "sleeping" as I am sure you know.. but saying "put to sleep" somehow makes it feel less nasty so we sugar coat the words
unfortunately like another poster said the problem starts with people - people who do not spay or neuter, people who either accidentally or intentionally allow their pets to breed without having homes lined up for the produced off spring.
of course their are other situations like older animals or those who are suffering - I think at this point if the animals bad days out number their good ones, it is time to end their suffering..
its a personal choice but its not fair to leave a suffering animal to a lingering painful death...
at the same time I beleive there are some humans who should be granted the same

I have had to put down a few animals in my time, mostly for old age reasons, and let me tell you, It was better for them. First was my dog who I loved dearly, but she was in terrible pain from cancer. Next was her mother, not really in pain but senile and suffering renal failure. Last was my old horse, who was 33(human equivalent approx 90 years). This one was the hardest, because he was still healthy. All his organs, his teeth and his eyes, his coat were all perfect, but he just couldnt walk anymore. He fought us, he still wanted his life, but he couldnt walk any more due to arthritis. If I could have bought him four new legs I would have.
As for the people who have animals put down just because they dont want them, I hope their kids do the same to them, so they know how it feels.
This is a hard question because even though I had my animals put down to save them pain, Ive always wondered if nature should really be messed with. Should they have been allowed to suffer and die naturally? I cant bear to see those I love in pain, but is it right? I just dont know.

This is truly a people problem. The simple solution is to spay or neuter every pet! For every human their is 45 cats and 18 dogs born! I have a family of 6 if we did our part we'd have 270 cats and 108 dogs. Tell me that is reasonable?

The only reason an animal should be put down in my opinion is when they are so ill that nothing can be done for them, if you can not afford to have them treated then turn them over to an SPCA and have them treat them and put them up for adoption. I do not believe in putting an animal down because of behavior problems, they just need tender loving care and special training and patience.

Living on a farm I had seen many animals (horses, dogs and cats) put down for many reasons (broken limbs, cancer, infections ect). Honeslty it IS hard to see them go, but you do feel better knowing that they are not going to suffer more. I agree with euthanasia with animals when it calls for it (uncurable illness)

It is much more humane than letting them suffer. I had my husband's little dog put to sleep a month after my husband died. She had gone way downhill, couldn't see, and was miserable without my husband. So I made the choice to let her join him so they could be together in spirit. It is very painless...she just drifted away ...very quickly and peacefully.

Euthanasia is a very humane way to help out animals who are in pain or suffering. Letting animals suffer is cruel and unecessary!!!!!!!!
