It isn't *supposed* to be easy to make money, especially at low level. But some ideas for maximizing your returns:
1) Never, ever leave anything resembling loot behind. Even grey items are worth something, sometimes more than you'd expect. (Notable examples: Thick Spider Hair and Bear Gall Bladder.) The sum of their value, for something you otherwise wouldn't miss, can really add up over time. Any white or higher item is useful to *someone* - but you'll have to figure out who if you want to sell it to them.
2) Keep an eye out for items that can be sold to other players, either directly or through the Auction House. The heaviest demand will vary from one server to another and over time, but textiles and healing potions seem to be consistent favorites.
3) Focus on skills and professions that can make high-demand items. Mining is said to be a license to print money, and enchanters at high level can produce some pretty expensive toys. While less glamorous, an industrious Alchemist can crank out enough healing and specialty potions to make a decent living.
4) You'll make more in the long run selling a high volume of low profit items than a few big-ticket whoppers. Yes, this makes it more like a job than the lottery, but it's a fact of economic reality.
5) Profit from the War Effort. For relatively low-value items you get a chest with a green item; if you can't use it, sell it directly or put it up at the AH. Yes, it's still work to *get* the stuff to donate, but you're not supposed to be making money just sitting on your a$$; we have politicians to do that.
6) You can make money trading at the AH, but *only* if you know what you're doing. Seek out undervalued items, snap them up, then resell them at a higher profit. Sounds easy but it takes a keen eye, a head for numbers, fast fingers and a lot of luck.
7) Become a delivery ***** for lazy players with money. If you're on a developed server, there will be players with more money than time. You can fetch things for them and get paid a premium for it. More generally, you can always be a speculator: For example, when buying your Expert Cooking book buy a couple extras to put up at the AH; someone will pay an extra 50s+ not to have to make the trip themselves.
8) Go fishing. No, really. Not only can you sell Oily Blackmouth at 1s+ apiece, but as your skill improves you'll find more and more containers - especially if you make a point of fishing any Floating Debris you encounter. This is basically free loot. Find a Tailor, Enchanter or Leatherworker to buy it from you and you have a steady source of income.
Good luck and happy adventuring.

Depends on character type and skill. The easiest way is farming for something or other. Gathering skills like herbalism and mining do well - a stack of high-end herbs can be 20gp each, arcane crystals go for 20-40 gp. If you get into things like dark iron ore, 5-10 gp per stack.
A lot of people find little spots like Felwood to just tear through critters - felcloth drops can make a lot of money, and you'll occasionally get some nice items. Even grey loot from the satyrs can be worth something.
Even tearing through lower-level dungeons can get some cash - a 60 can solo the Scarlet Monastery, for example, and make 10-20 gold, more so if there's a rare drop.
I've heard rumors of people making 100gp a day in Silithus, but I'm not sure of the details on that just yet.
