The float might stick? The flapper may not seal well? The well/drain exit may be degraded? The chain may need length adjustment?
"Guts" are a bargain, and an easy DIY issue.

Check to see if the chain is long enough to close or is the float screwed on tight enough and not cracked or filling with water so it will rise when the tank fills with water. Either of these things will let your toilet keep running and run up your water bill quick.

Take the top off the back of the tank. Inside at the bottom you will see (usually) a black round rubber that covers the hole that when you flush lifts and lets the water run through the hole. If the rubber cover does not close or fit properly water will still lead into the hole . the chain its attached to may be also caught up. they are not hard to fix . GoodLuck..

use the water valve behind the toliet and turn the water off. Then open the top of the bowl and pull the lever up that should stop it.

it's probably wore out and needs replacing,it's not expensive at all and you can do it yourself,if your toilet parts or new adjust them ,could be to tight
