there is no opposite to syllable. Unless its an entire word, since syllables are units of sound and speech. There are also morphemes, which are minimum units of letters required to make coherent structures within words, and phonemes, which are the smallest units necessary to produce a sound. We also have letter, which are units of the alphabet which is mobilized to construct words in a way which everybody within a speaking community agrees on. Maybe what you're looking for is a vowel or a consonant. Vowels in English are a,e,i,o,u and sometimes y. Consonants are every other letter. There are hard consonants (b,c,d,g,j,k,p,q,t,x) and soft consonants (f,h,l,m,n,r,s,v,w,y,z). I hope this has helped.
