I have wondered that same thing for the longest time. The only thing I could ever think of is that they just used a kind of reverse psychology. Instead of letting the derogatory labels get to them, they used it themselves as a joke. It was a way to get back at the people who originated the remark. So when somebody of that race uses it, it is considered a joke. However, when somebody of a different race uses it, it is considered derogatory or racist. Now that is how I think it started, nowadays I don't think the people using these labels even know why they do, it is just something they adapted and use ignorantly. I have no evidence to prove this, it is just a hypothesis, but it makes sense to me so I go with it.

I don't use derogatory words and I would prefer if no one use those words but from my understanding people twist the meaning around so it no longer holds it's power over us. Kind of like Alanis Morissette song "I'm a Bi&ch".

if i use a racial derogatory term that is used for my race on someone of my own race, abviously i don't take any hateful meaning out of it so by saying it i am not trying to put a hateful image onto someone else.

Because it means something different if we say it. If a white person says it there is a totally different meaning to it and I think you know what that is already.

i agree .. they dont want to be referred to as these names. but yet they insist on keeping the words alive themselves..if they dont wanna be called the N word then they need to stop using the word themselves..

I don't give a hoot what I call myself, because I know it is right and true and pertinent to the moment but, if you or anyone else were to say that, well, ....................
